Ministry to People vs. Ministry for People

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

This simple yet sweeping command from Paul frames everything the church is meant to be. When a church forgets its ultimate purpose, ministry can subtly shift from serving people for God’s glory to serving them as the goal. That shift may seem small, but the consequences are significant.

Ministry becomes “for people” when meeting needs, preferences, or expectations becomes the end goal. A church might prioritise comfort or familiarity—designing services around ease, avoiding confrontation with sin, or focusing on feel-good messages. Others might cater to the desire for community or self-improvement, striving to meet personal aspirations or build strong social networks. In such settings, people may feel served—but remain spiritually unchanged. The result is man-centred ministry: consumer-driven, shallow in discipleship, and prone to burnout and disappointment when expectations aren’t met.

This shift is often unintentional and motivated by genuine care for people, but it requires correction to refocus on God’s ultimate purpose for His church. The danger is clear—when people are the end, God becomes a means.

What if the goal of ministry isn’t to meet people’s needs, but to lead them to worship?

Ministry to people for the glory of God seeks to do exactly that. Its goal is to reveal the greatness of God, call people to worship Him, and grow them in their knowledge and love of Christ. It serves people, yes—but does not end with the wellbeing of the person served. It serves to help them centre their lives on God, find their deepest joy in Him, and reflect His glory in every part of life.

Human satisfaction isn’t the aim; it is the byproduct of lives that are rightly ordered around making God’s name great. When God is the ultimate focus, the joy people experience becomes deeper and more lasting. We are created for this purpose. As the Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”

As we seek to serve others, we must constantly examine our motivations and align them with God’s glory. When ministry aligns with this, people are not neglected—they are truly loved, because they are pointed to the only One who can satisfy their souls forever.

Christ, God’s only begotten son died to replaced all those sacrifices of 1000’s of bulls, goats, lambs not counting the bags of flour etc. what a Saviour.
May we earnestly worship Him every day, in everything, in our eating, drinking and going about our lives in our homes and in the church.
